HISTORY

The three major wars we consider that shaped modern day Canada are

The Seven  Years War  (1756-1763)

The American Revolution (1776)

The War of 1812

The SevenYears War or French Indian War as it was known  in North America was resolved between the English and French by the Treaty of Paris  (1763 ) and  Quebec Act (1774)

Questions to consider

What was the effect of the expulsion of the Acadians on the French settlers in Both America?
Why did the English expel the Acadians?
How does the Treaty of Paris and The Quebec Act show  a change in English policy in their dealings with the French on the New World?

HISTORY

Before 1867, Canada was called British North America (BNA). It was not a country. It was divided into areas called colonies. A colony is an area under the control of another country. Britain was the mother country of these colonies.
It defended its colonies in British North America and had a special trade relationship with them.

Why did  the colonies of British North America joined together to become the country of Canada.

This joining together of colonies into a country is called Confederation.

Today we discussed that fear of American attack.

HISTORY

Canada became a country, the Dominion of Canada, in 1867.
Before that, British North America was made up of a few provinces, the vast area of Rupert’s Land (privately owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company), and the North-Western Territory.
By 1864, many leaders felt that it would be good to join into one country. Known as the Fathers of Confederation, these leaders met and wrote a constitution for the new country, which had to be passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
Once passed, it became known as the British North America Act, or the BNA Act. This Act brought together the three provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada (which became the provinces of Ontario and Quebec).
The BNA Act described the structure and main laws of the new country, as well as the division of powers between the new provinces and the federal government.
