SCIENCE
Today we discussed salinity and desalination methods. Make sure you can define both terms
Salinity is the 'saltiness' of a body of water.
The concentration of dissolved salt in a given volume of water is called salinity.
Freshwater has very little salt. Sea water has a lot more.
Watch the video below.

Today we began watching a documentary called Blue Gold. We will continue watching and discussing this week.
Today we talked about whether water should be a public right.
Should water rights be sold to private companies or should they be kept available for free for everyone?
What do you think?

SCIENCE
Today, the grade seven began their study on Substances.

We learned about the particle theory of matter.
Particle Theory states that:
1. All matter is made up of tiny particles.
2. All particles of one substance are the same.
3. Different substances are made of different particles.
4. Particles are always moving. (The more energy, the faster they move)
5. There are attractive forces between particles. (Forces are stronger when particles are closer together)
We watched the video below

What is a parasite?
An organism that gets its food from living inside another or attaching to its host.
What is a biological contaminant?
Parasites from contaminated feces enter the ground water or surface water.
Thermal Pollution- artificial raising of the temperature.

SCIENCE
97 % of the water on earth is salt water. It cannot be drunk. Only 3 % of the water is fresh water.
Ground Water- water found below the earth's surface. People or places that get their water from wells depend on ground water.
They are interconnected. For example, in areas where the lakes and streams have disappeared, people depend on ground water.
Aquifers and Aquitards
Aquifers- Underground layers of permeable rock that store water and allow water to pass through.
Aquitards-Underground layers of low permeable rock that allows very little water to pass through.
Aquiclude- Impermeable rock that allows prevents the movement of water.
Today Experiments
Lab 1 Experiment
Gravel, silt and sand are an aquifer. They allow water to pass through.
Clay is an aquitard. It allows very little water.
Lab 2- Shallow Wells
Lab 3 How does water rise in columns?
Water rises in column of sand.
Lab 4 What environment holds that water?
Grass allows water to return to the water table and replenish our groundwater.
Pavement does not allow water to return the water table.
