CARTOON ASSIGNMENT

LANGUAGE:
Watch the news from a credible news source for the next few days. Pick a current event or topical issue. Create a cartoon that parodies or satirizes that issue. Use the criteria we created as a class when completing your assignment. It is due next week Wednesday.

SUCCESS CRITERIA

1. It must be funny.
2. It must have proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.
3. It must be creative.
4. It must be attention grabbing.
5. The images should flow with the story layout.
6. It must make sense so that the viewer can understand.
7. There must be good quality illustrations.
8. It must be about something that the audience  finds important so that they can relate to it. 
9. The text should match the words, and the pictures and words should be clear. 
10. It should be short and get right to the point. 
11. It should have a message. 

Success Criteria for Cartoon Assignment for Period 1 Class

1. Pictures must match the words

2.There must be clear , easy to understand message that has meaning for the audience.

3. It is not too long.

4. It makes the audience feel something. 

5. It must be funny.

6. The visuals must be well drawn, attention grabbing and eye catching.

7. The txt must be clear.

SCIENCE

THE WATER CYCLE

Water on earth exists in all 3 states.

Evaporation- Liquid to Gas

Melting- solid to liquid

Sublimation- Solid to gas

Both evaporation, melting and sublimation involve heat being added

Deposition - Gas to solid

Freezing-Liquid to solid

Condensation- Gas to liquid

Freezing, condensation and deposition  involve heat being taken lost or taken away

Precipitation - solid or liquid water that falls to earth. ( Snow, sleet or rain)

10.2 WHAT IS WATER
 Definitions

 A water molecule is made up of one oxygen particle and two hydrogen particles.  The O is negative and H is positive. 

irrigate- to supply water to crops or land

Water- is a colourless, tasteless and odourless substance.

Water is the universal solvent because many substances dissolve in water. This is part of why it is so necessary for life.

Living things (plants and animals are mostly made up of water).

Water is important in the human body ( essential for our health) because:

1. Over half of the human  body is made up of water.

2. Water is the transport system that carries nutrients and substances to  all the cells (tissues and organs) of the body.

3. Important chemical reactions can only take place in water. 

4. Water keeps us cool since as we sweat we lose heat energy. 

Particle Theory of Matter states:

1.Everything is made of particles.

2. Those particles are constantly moving.

3. There are spaces  between the particles.

4. When heated, the particles move faster as they have more energy. 

States of Water

Water can be a gas ( water vapour), liquid or solid (ice).

Water particles have in most energy when they are in the vapour state. And they have the least when they are the solid state.

Canada West- now called Ontario
Canada East- now called Quebec

In 1841, Canada West and Canada East united. This is the first step towards Confederation. Canada is still a British colony.
The role of the legislature is to pass laws.
In 1857 Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the permanent capital.
The 4 political parties were-
The Liberal party (Grits)- active in Canada West
The Conservative party (Tories)- active in Canada West
Bleus - active in Canada East
Rouges- active in Canada East
Equal Representation- each region/colony has the same number of seats in the legislature.
As the population in Canada West rose, they started to believe that they should have more seats in Parliament. They argued for representation by population.
Representation by population- the more the population of a region, the more seats should have in Parliament.

George Brown and John A Macdonald were from Canada West. 
Etienne Cartier  was from Canada East. 

He opposed representation by population. He felt that the English already had a majority in the legislature. The Canadiens (people of French background ) were already a minority in Canada East. If Canada East had less seats than Canada West, they ( Canadiens) would be under represented! He argued that this would be unfair.

In history we have been studying North America in the 1800s. While British North American colonies are considering coming together to form a confederation, the former British colonies (The USA) was splitting apart.

MANIFEST DESTINY

American Civil War took place between the North states ( The Union) and the South (the Confederacy).
They fought over whether slavery should be legal.
 The US Civil War is from 1861-1865.
Slavery was abolished in 1833 in all the British colonies.
The North  and the South disagreed about slavery.
The South liked slavery because the work was done for free and they did not have to pay their workers. They felt their economy depended on slavery.
The North disliked slavery because;
1. Southern states could sell their products a lot cheaper than they could.
2. Slavery was wrong. It was wrong to exploit or take advantage of someone for one's own benefit.

BNA supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Union was worried about attacks from the borders of BNA.
Confederate agents used Montreal and Toronto to plot against the Union.
The Union was more powerful than the Confederacy.

Manifest Destiny- the belief that the US had a duty to take over the ALL of North America.

Mission 220

During the month of November we look at the issue of war and peace. We see that at times war is necessary or inevitable, but it always comes a terrific cost.
