Song of Myself (1892 version)

BY WALT WHITMAN
1
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

  1. i think that for line 3 Walt Whitman was talking about getting married to someone, because when someone describes getting married they describe it as become one with another person. Binding together with someone, where they belong to you and you belong to them.

  2. I think when you celebrate yourself and sing yourself means to thank God for who you are. I think what I assume, you shall assume means that if I think you're beautiful or smart you should think so too. I think for every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you means that we are all important to God because we are his creations. My favourite sentence is that "I celebrate myself, and sing myself" because I think that it is a very important part of the poem. It influences us to love ourselves and be thankful for us. -Daniela

  3. I think this poem by Walt Whitman has a wonderful meaning .The meaning of " Song of Myself" that I received was that you should celebrate who you are and your uniqueness. The way you see your self is how others see your personality. The third line to me means that we should all treat each other the same and appreciate our own differences.

  4. I really like this poem because it tells us that we should be happy with who we are, and that instead downing our self we should be celebrating our self. But ever if the poem doesn't make complete sense it is sending a good message.

  5. I think the poet is trying to say that he loves the way he is and whatever he thinks about himself others should think the same. Matthew

  7. When the poet wrote these lines of the poem, I personally think he was trying to promote the idea that we should be proud of ourselves and embrace our uniqueness. I think the poet says that if we do that others will see us as that, proud of ourselves. For that we shouldn't treat others different for what they are but celebrate them for who they are. I think these words hold a deep meaning and that we must dive deep into it to understand it completely.

  10. This poem makes me gain confidence in myself because he has confidence and i know that because he says that he celebrates himself so he loves to be himself and he thinks he is a good person and that inspires me. He wants to give back to the world, and i think that because he says every atom that belongs to him as good belongs to us so he wants to make other people as happy as he is by sharing. He wants everyone to agree with him that were all in this together and we need each other but we don't necessarily need each other because we have ourselves and that is enough. ~Kali

  12. I think this poem is about loving yourself no matter what anyone else says or thinks. I think the poet wants to show how he celebrates and loves who he is, and is very confident. One thing I didn't like was that I was getting confused about the poem. When he said I sing myself, I wasn't sure if he meant that he sings to himself or by himself. Also, I didn't understand if by "And what I assume, you shall assume" he meant that we should think what he thinks, or that we think the same things as him. Overall, I really liked this poem, even though it got confusing at times. -Praveena

  13. I don't know what exactly to make of this poem. It seems to contradict. In the first two lines, it says to me, 'Im amazing, what I say is right, and everyone else is wrong.' But then the third line completely flips it, as to me it's saying, 'We share this world. What I own, you own as well.' Definitely a strange poem, and one I'd like to finish reading.

  14. I think that this poem is talking about self-esteem, and how if you think highly of yourself, others would think so as well. How one sees themselves can greatly effect what others around you think. Although, the last line, seems like a giving of self, perhaps to another person or to God. The second and last line also sort of seems like a becoming one of two people, perhaps in marriage?

  16. The last line made the most sense to me .I think the last sentence means that we are all equal therefore anything I do is as good as what you do.
I wish Walt Whitman wrote clearer because it is hard to understand what he was trying to say.And i wish he used motion/voice when he wrote because it is easier to understand what he was going through and what was happening.

  18. I think this poem means that God has given us a life and we need for cherish that and respect that we are all special and important to him and that what God assumes or think of yourself then you should assume or think that too. Lastely I think it also means that how we live, effects how God lives .-Daniela

  19. I think the meaning of this poem is that you should be proud of who you are and accept and celebrate your uniqueness . If you doubt yourself , others might think you aren't that great but if you celebrate who you are others will probably think you are great too. We shouldn't treat each other differently but appreciate our wonderful differences.

  20. The poem Song of Myself has various meanings. In the first line he states " I celebrate myself, and sing myself," could mean that he celebrates his accomplishments and birthdays in many diffrent ways. In the second line he states " And what I assume you shall assume," could be he is talking to his parents or wife and what he believes they also believe because they are a family or in a relationship and usually they all believe in the same thing. In the third line he states " For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you," could mean that everything he has gathered in life belongs to his loved ones because they have given him everything and so he would want to give it all back by offering what he has kept and offer it to them. But in the end I think the poem is talking about how people react to meeting new people and how when we first meet someone new we don't know them but as time goes buy they get to know and we give everything thats ours to them.-kasandra
