Kateri Tekakwitha

            Kateri Tekakwitha was the daughter of a Mohawk chief named Kennorkwa, and a Roman Catholic Algonquin named Tagaskouita. Kateri was pressured to get married around the age of thirteen but she refused.  She was a modest girl who didn't go out to social gatherings. She used a blanket to cover her head because she had smallpox scars. Kateri was skilled at traditional women's arts. She was able to make clothing and belts from animal skins, weaving mats, baskets and boxes from reeds and grasses. In 1675, at the age of eighteen, Kateri met Jesuit Father Jacques de Lamberville and started to study catechism with him. During the Holy Week, in 1679, people started to notice Kateri getting weaker, she was failing. When people knew she had few hours left, villagers and priests gathered around he. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of 24. Kateri's last words were "I will love you in heaven".

I learned that the Christian martyrs had to keep their Christianity a secret or else they would've been killed. I think that giving up their life for god and their love for god was very remarkable. Their similarities are that they both were forced to get married and the both died because of their faith. Their differences are that St. Cecilia agreed to get married and St.Kateri didn't, also St.Kateri was part of a tribe.
